Cup of Tea Piece - Session 1 - 19/10/2023

For our first major filming assignment of the course, we were tasked with filming a 90 second film about the making of a cup of tea. For how the shots were composed, we were encouraged to take inspiration from a film we had watched previously named Gattica. Being split into groups, I partnered with Kavinayaa and Quevin to help with the acting, audio recording and filming of the short film. My initial ideas were of minimalistic shots of the process of making the tea, with no dialogue and as much focus on the tea as possible, thought this decision was later changed to include more focus on the person making the tea. The audio design would be solely focused on the sounds of making tea, partially inspired by the ASMR video genre popular on social media.

As a storyboard I wrote down the ideas for how the shots would be laid out in order, mainly the action that would be filmed instead of visual depictions of events due to us not yet knowing the exact location we would be filming in. We initially decided to have 12 total shots of the tea making process, though this number grew as a response to feedback received from our lecturer, Stephen, and to our growing number of ideas as we continued to film. Many of these shots were rearranged or scrapped during filming due to both limited filming space and overcomplexity.

For the location of the shoot we decided to use a nearby student kitchen in the hallway next to our base room, as it had decent lighting, a good amount of space to work around, and was generally quiet enough to not worry about people or other noises in the background disrupting the audio. We also went over who would be doing which tasks during filming, with myself doing the majority of the filming, Kavinayaa taking charge of making the tea (mainly because she was the only one of us that knew how to), and Quevin handling audio, thought Kavinayaa and Quevin later changed their roles as we focused more on filming the face of who was making the tea, with Kavinayaa not being comfortable having her face being filmed which is understandable, at least to me.

Hopefully what we produce at the end of this assignment can be of good enough quality to get each of us a passing mark, and serve as a good introduction to what we'll be expecting from future assignments throughout our time at Herts Uni.
